There are two main components of a ratchet, The socket and the handle the socket attaches to. First, let’s take a look at the different parts of a ratchet wrench:
Handle: The handle grip is important for the ratchet ratchet wrench’s functionality. The more comfortable the handle, the longer you can consistently turn the wrench without interruption.
Drive tang: The size of the drive tang (1/4-inch, 3/8-inch or 1/2-inch) determines what size socket you can use with the ratchet.
Low profile head: The low-set head on a ratchet wrench allows you to fit it in tight spaces.
Socket retention ball: Used to hold the socket in place during use.
Directional switch: This switch on the back of the handle’s head (not pictured above) allows you to control the direction of the wrench to tighten or loosen.
Socket release button: Also located on the back of the socket head, this small control releases the socket after use.
Step-by-Step Guide to Using a Ratchet Wrench
Attaching the Socket
Grab the socket that corresponds to the size of the fastener you’re working with. Mismatched sizes can damage both the wrench and the fastener. Align the socket’s drive hole with the drive square of the ratchet wrench. Push the socket firmly onto the square until you hear a satisfying click. This click signifies that the socket is securely locked in place.
Positioning The Wrench
Hold your wrench handle tightly to have a firm grip on it for ease of torque application without slippage.Make sure you center your socket properly on top of the fastener head, because slanted or skewed sockets will cause harm to both this head and itself hence please find time and confirm proper alignment.
Adjust Ratchet Direction
Find where the selector switch is located on the handle (usually near the base). It sets the direction of the ratcheting mechanism. To tighten, gently push the switch to allow clockwise movement by the handle. Similarly, to loosen, slightly push the switch such that the handle moves anti-clockwise.

Final Tightening and Loosening
As you tighten a fastener, you’ll feel increasing resistance. When you reach the desired tightness (check manufacturer’s specifications if necessary), discontinue applying force; overtightening will impair the fastener or damage your workpiece.
